deposition in the trial of John D. Lee
      It was in September.

      1857.

All that I performed was to carry an express from Cedar City to Great Salt Lake City.

      From Isaac C. Haight.

      President of Cedar City.

I know only that he was called to that office.

Under the church government of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He sent for me. He had a message written to send up to Salt Lake, and he wished to get a man to take it up. He had not found one when I went down there to his house, and he asked me if I would take it. I told him I would.

He gave me the message to read.

      Yes, sir.

The same as I stated before. That the Indians attacked the wagon train and got them corralled at the Mountain Meadows, and John D. Lee wanted to know what should be done. Lee at this time was responsible for what was called "The Post." He was the Indian Agent for the area.

To Brigham Young, Governor of Utah Territory.

I wrapped it up carefully and put it away where no one would get it until I delivered it.

Just as quick as I could go home, put on a shirt, and saddle a horse.

I left Cedar City at four o'clock in the afternoon, and it was the morning of the third day from then that I got to Great Salt Lake City.

Yes, sir, I was at the Lion House just after daybreak.

Yes, where Brigham Young had his office, or it was then.

You might call it immediately. It was not over fifteen minutes.

      Yes, sir.

      I handed him my message.

He opened it and read it.

He told me I had better go lie down and take a little sleep. To be there again at one o'clock in the afternoon, and he would have a letter of reply ready for me to take back to Cedar.

      Yes, sir.

      Of the same day.
